1. What are freckles?
Freckles are small, flat spots on the skin, ranging in size from tiny dots to a few millimeters (usually less than 5mm).
They can appear in varying quantities and develop randomly on the skin, especially after prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Freckles commonly occur in individuals with fair skin or in areas exposed to sunlight (face, neck, chest, shoulders, etc.), with the face being the most common location. Freckles may appear as early as 1 to 2 years old.
Most freckles on an individual will have a consistent color, though some may have different colors such as red, yellow, gray, light brown, dark brown, or black.
Generally, they tend to be darker and more pronounced when exposed to sunlight and lighter in the winter months.
Freckles are related to the increase in pigmentation that darkens the skin but are not associated with an increase in the production of pigment-forming cells.
